Outlook Plugin to Integrating Dropbox

Dropbox is the de-facto standard for file synchronization. It is present on both desktop and mobile operating systems. Why not integrate Dropbox within applications themselves? We have developed an Outlook add-on to attach files residing on Dropbox. The sender chooses files synchronized by Dropbox from a new Outlook panel. and the recipient can open the attachment via a published URL. If the file is public then it can be downloaded from a public URL. Private files are published on a secret url and shortened. All the details are handled behind the scenes using the Dropbox API. Dropbox automatically assigns the expiration date for the files. This information is summarized in the e-mail.

Dropbox is an excellent addition to managed file transfer solutions, as it eliminates the need to spend money and time on developing and deploying applications for different platforms. Dropbox already synchronizes files across Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X, Apple iOS, Linux, Android, and Blackberry. Windows Phone 7 does not have an official Dropbox application yet but unofficial ones have already been created with the Dropbox API.

Microsoft Outlook is the most popular desktop e-mail client in the world (link to campaign monitor statistics). Integrating Outlook with Dropbox via a plugin is a no-brainer offering. The plugin could be expanded in the future to incorporate automatic synchronization of files attached outside Dropbox to the Dropbox folder.

Another important benefit of using Dropbox within Outlook is that it allows you to easily attach very large files like movies or virtual machine images for applications such as VMWare, VirtualBox or Hyper-V.
